Teaching Guide: ESL Listening from Pre-A1 to B1

Listening is the hardest skill to practise with learners of English: you need recordings at the right level, with good questions, and enough of them to last the year. This free generator creates A4 listening worksheets with original scripts levelled by the Common European Framework (CEFR), from Pre-A1 to B1, in the task formats of the Cambridge English listening papers (Starters, Movers, Flyers, A2 Key and B1 Preliminary) and the PISA 2025 Foreign Language Assessment. The second document is the script: you read it aloud twice and learners answer on their sheet.

64 original scripts

Four tasks (tick the picture, match, true or false and complete the notes) and four scripts of each task per level, written for LearnKits.

Levelled by the CEFR

Pre-A1 (ages 8-10), A1 (10-12), A2 (12-14) and B1 (14-16): short dialogues in the present at the start, and interviews, radio programmes and opinions at B1.

No audio needed

The teacher’s script is the second document: every text with the speakers’ names, ready to read aloud, and the answers at the end. It works in any classroom.

Exam-style tasks

Choosing one picture out of three, matching people to pictures or words, true or false and completing notes with spelt names, numbers and times, as in the official exams.

Print-friendly pictures

The options at the lower levels are our own line drawings, with no outside images or colour, so they print cleanly in black and white.

Answer key in the script

The answers come at the end of each script, with the word of each picture, so you can mark straight after the second listening.

Frequently Asked Questions about ESL Listening

How does a listening worksheet work without audio?
Print the worksheet for your learners and the teacher’s script for yourself (click Print and choose “Worksheet and answer key”). Read each text aloud twice, at a natural speed, while learners answer. If there are two adults, share out the speakers of the dialogues.
Which levels and ages are they for?
Four CEFR levels: Pre-A1 (ages 8-10), A1 (10-12), A2 (12-14) and B1 (14-16). The ages are a guide: choose the level of your learners’ English, not their age.
Do they help prepare for Cambridge English exams?
Yes. The four tasks follow the listening papers of Starters, Movers and Flyers, A2 Key and B1 Preliminary: choosing the right picture out of three, matching, completing notes and deciding whether a statement is true. The scripts are original practice material, not official exam papers.
What is the PISA Foreign Language Assessment?
In 2025 PISA assessed a foreign language, English, for the first time, with reading and listening graded by the CEFR. These worksheets practise the listening side with real-life situations: announcements, messages, conversations and interviews.
How should I use them in class?
Before listening, give learners a minute to read the questions and guess what they will hear. The first time, they answer what they can; the second time, they check. Afterwards, read the script together and find where each answer was: it is the best way to see why an option was wrong.
What else can I use for English?
Do the scripts repeat?
Each task has four scripts per level. No script appears twice within one exercise, and selecting it on the sheet and clicking “New” picks others and shuffles the order of the options.
Is any student data sent to a server?
No. Worksheets are created in your browser and no student data is stored. Templates are kept in your browser’s memory.
