Teaching guide: creative writing and creative thinking

Imaginative writing grows from a good starting point: dice that throw together a dragon, an island and a key, the first line of a surprising story, or a challenge that asks for lots of different ideas. This free creative writing prompts worksheet generator makes A4 worksheets for Grades 2 to 6 with drawn story dice, story starters and the PISA creative thinking tasks, with a different prompt on every copy and a teacher guide with a rubric.

Story dice

Dice with our own drawings: a character, a place and an object, plus a problem at level 2 and two characters at level 3. Every copy rolls its own dice.

Story starters

The first sentence of a surprising story (“One morning, my dog started to talk.”) and lines to carry it on, with a title from level 2.

Different ideas

Uses for a sock, titles, names or explanations: three or four ideas that are not alike and, at the higher levels, picking the most original.

Original and improve

Invent an animal, a machine or a sport nobody else would think of, and improve someone else's idea without losing it.

Complete a drawing

A different starting shape on every copy to turn into a drawing with a title, like the PISA visual expression tasks.

Teacher guide with rubric

Objectives, how to run it, every copy's prompt with example answers and a three-level rubric, with full, partial or no credit for the PISA tasks.

Frequently asked questions about the creative writing worksheets

What are story dice?
Dice with a picture on each face: a character, a place, an object and, from level 2, a problem. The worksheet shows the face each die landed on and the pupil writes a story that uses them all. Every copy gets a different combination, so no two stories are the same.
How does this relate to PISA creative thinking?
PISA 2022 assessed creative thinking for the first time, with written expression, visual expression and social and scientific problem-solving tasks that ask pupils to generate diverse ideas, generate an original idea, and evaluate and improve ideas. The “Many different ideas”, “An original idea”, “Improve an idea”, “Complete a drawing” and “Solve problems” types follow those formats, adapted for primary school.
How is it different from guided writing?
Guided writing teaches the structure of each text type (story, letter, news report, opinion) with a planning box and marked parts. These worksheets are open-ended: they give a starting point and let pupils invent, with no fixed structure.
Is there an answer key?
There are no single answers. Instead of an answer key, the worksheet comes with a teacher guide: objectives, how to run it in class, every copy's prompt with example answers and a three-level assessment rubric.
What line spacing does it use?
10 mm in Grade 2, 9 mm in Grades 3-4 and 8 mm in Grades 5-6. Under More options you can choose from 7 to 10 mm, put one prompt per sheet so the lines fill it, or leave the words off the dice so pupils name what they see.
Which other language worksheets go well with these?
To structure texts, guided writing; to read before writing, reading comprehension; for neat handwriting, handwriting practice; and to build story vocabulary, word searches. Find every resource of the subject in Language.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. The worksheets are made in your browser and any templates you save stay only in your browser's memory.
