Teaching guide: letter of the week worksheets

Many early years classes work on one letter a week: children trace it, look for it, hear it at the start of words and build a word with it. This generator makes that sheet for any letter or number in one click, with pictures to colour, the letter highlighted in colour and an answer key. It is the kind of sheet many special education teachers put together by hand every week.

From more help to less

The exercises come in order: trace the letter, then pick it out among others, then find it at the start of a word, and finally build the word. Each step takes away a little help.

One vocabulary

The word a child circles because it begins with the letter is the word they build in the last exercise. They do not have to work out new pictures in every exercise, so the sheet reads as one task.

Fair distractors

The letters to circle are mixed with vowels or with letters that look alike. The other pictures begin with a different sound: never a k for c, never a j for g.

Cut out and glue

At age 5 the word is built by cutting out the letters at the bottom and gluing them into the boxes, a hands-on activity that helps children who are not writing yet. It can also be traced or written.

Frequently asked questions about letter of the week worksheets

Which letters are there?
Every letter with enough words that have a picture: the vowels and most consonants. There are also number sheets from 1 to 10, with groups to count and pictures to colour.
Capital or small letters?
By default small letters, as phonics starts with them, with the capital beside them where the sheet traces the letter. The options can set capital letters throughout.
Are they suitable for special education?
Yes: they are practice sheets made for learning support too, with few, large items and the letter highlighted. There is more in the learning support worksheets and, for letter formation, the handwriting generator.
Is there an answer key?
Yes: the circled letters, the picture that begins with the letter, the words built, the group with the number and how many pictures to colour.
