Teacher’s guide: token boards and behaviour charts

Positive behaviour support means saying what we expect, reinforcing it when it happens and showing what comes next. This generator makes the sheets used in class and at home: token boards, reward charts, first-then boards, contracts, self-monitoring checklists and an ABC chart for the teacher.

Token boards and reward charts

A board of 3, 5 or 10 tokens with a box for the reward and tokens to cut out, and a weekly chart with the targets you write. In the early years, with faces to colour.

First and then

Two large boxes to draw or write what we do first and what comes next. It helps children know what is coming and accept a harder task before one they enjoy.

Contracts and self-monitoring

A contract with the targets, what the adult will do, the reward, a review date and signatures, and a checklist by session for the pupil to tick when they meet a target.

ABC chart

A grid to note what happens before a behaviour, the behaviour and what happens after, to spot patterns. It is a blank form: we keep no data about children.

Frequently asked questions about behaviour charts

How should I write the targets?
Positively and specifically: “I put my hand up to speak” rather than “don’t shout”. One per line; if you leave the list empty, the sheet prints blank lines to fill in by hand.
Is any pupil data saved?
No. Targets and names stay in the document in your browser; no data about children reaches our servers.
Are they suitable for autistic children or children with ADHD?
They are positive behaviour support tools like those used in class and at home. They do not replace a plan from a professional. There is more in the learning support worksheets.
How many tokens are on the board?
By age: 3 in the early years, 5 at primary and 10 at secondary, or the number you choose in the options. Start with a few so the reward comes soon.
