Column addition on a 4 mm grid, with or without carrying, two to five addends and up to seven digits. Every worksheet is new and comes with its answer key.
Column addition is the first written method children learn, and carrying is where most of them first get stuck. This addition worksheet generator makes new sums every time, in order of difficulty: no carrying first, then carrying once or more, and finally several addends and large numbers. Every sum sits on the 4 mm squares, so ones, tens and hundreds stay lined up.

Addition without carrying
Level 1 sets two- and three-digit sums where no column goes over 9 (423 + 254): ideal for learning to line numbers up and add column by column.
Addition with carrying
Level 2 sets three- and four-digit sums that carry between columns. The answer key writes each carried digit above its column, as on the board.
Three addends and big numbers
Level 3 stacks three numbers (1,485 + 672 + 2,390) and level 4 adds five-digit numbers, for concentration and working memory.
Custom level
Choose how many addends (2 to 5), how many digits (up to 7) and whether sums carry never, sometimes or in every column. The random level mixes sums within the limits you set.
A4 sheet and answer key
8 to 20 sums per sheet, with a light guide grid if you want it. The answer key solves each sum with the carried digits in colour, so marking is quick.
Frequently asked questions about addition worksheets
When do children learn column addition with carrying?
Two-digit addition with carrying usually comes in Year 2 or Year 3, and three- and four-digit column addition is secured in Years 3 and 4. Level 1 (no carrying) is the place to start and level 2 practises carrying.
Can I make sums with three or more addends?
Yes. Level 3 sets three addends with carrying, and the Custom level allows up to five addends of up to seven digits each.
How do I save it as a PDF?
Click “Print”, choose the worksheet, the answer key or both, and pick “Save as PDF” in the print window.
Do the sums repeat?
No. Every time you click “New exercises” you get new sums of the same level, so you can make a different sheet for each pupil or each day.
Can I mix addition and subtraction on one sheet?
Yes. Add sums and then subtraction or any other exercise to the same sheet. For every operation together, use the operations generator.
