Teaching Guide: Percentages from Grade 6 to Grade 9

Percentages are everywhere: sales, VAT, surveys, the news and bills. This free percentage worksheet generator builds A4 worksheets that go from a percentage of an amount with the equivalent fraction (25% is 1/4) to the multiplier method, successive percentages and reverse percentages, with a step-by-step answer key. All the arithmetic is exact, with no rounding. To practise the basics, see the fraction operations and decimal operations worksheets too.

Percentage of an amount

At level 1 with the equivalent fraction (75% of 220 is 220 ÷ 4 × 3); then as a decimal (240 × 0.15) and with percentages such as 12.5% or 150%.

Increases and decreases

First by working out the increase or discount; from level 2 with the multiplier (−15% → × 0.85) and the percentage change between two amounts.

Successive percentages

Several changes in a row are worked out by multiplying the multipliers, which shows why a 20% rise followed by a 20% fall leaves the price 4% lower.

Reverse percentages

The price before a sale or before VAT: divide by the multiplier, and the answer key checks it.

Percentages, fractions and decimals

A table linking 75%, 3/4 and 0.75, with fractions in their simplest form and, at level 3, percentages such as 12.5% = 1/8.

Step-by-step answer key

Every exercise solved with each step named: the fraction or decimal, the multiplier, the division and the check. Word problems in context (surveys, pay, population) give the answer with its unit.

Frequently Asked Questions about Percentages

How do you find a percentage of an amount?
Multiply the amount by the percentage and divide by 100, which is the same as multiplying by the percentage as a decimal: 15% of 240 is 240 × 0.15 = 36. With easy percentages you can also use the fraction: 25% is 1/4, so 25% of 80 is 80 ÷ 4 = 20.
What is the multiplier method?
You multiply the amount by one number that applies the whole change. A 15% increase has multiplier 1 + 0.15 = 1.15 and a 15% decrease 1 − 0.15 = 0.85. So €240 with 15% off is 240 × 0.85 = €204.
How do you work out successive percentages?
Multiply the multipliers of each change. If a price rises by 20% and then falls by 20%, the overall multiplier is 1.2 × 0.8 = 0.96: the final price is 4% lower than at the start, not the same.
How do you find the original price (reverse percentages)?
Divide the final price by the multiplier. If something costs €64 after a 20% discount, it cost 64 ÷ 0.8 = €80 before. With VAT at 21%, a price of €121 is 121 ÷ 1.21 = €100 before VAT.
Which grades are the worksheets for?
Level 1 of percentage of an amount, increases and decreases and the percentages, fractions and decimals table suits Grade 6; level 2 Grades 7-8; successive and reverse percentages Grades 8-9.
Are worksheets or templates stored on a server?
No. Worksheets are created in your browser and no student data is stored. Templates are kept in your browser’s memory.
