Teaching Guide: Fraction Operations from Grade 5 to Grade 8

Working with fractions is one of the big steps in arithmetic: pupils need to see why numerators are added only when the denominators match, how the LCM gives a common denominator and why dividing means multiplying by the reciprocal. This free fraction operations worksheet generator builds A4 worksheets with stacked fractions, just like in an exercise book, and a step-by-step answer key.

Adding and subtracting

From like denominators to a common denominator: first one denominator a multiple of the other, then any denominators, with the LCM and equivalent fractions.

Multiplying and dividing

A fraction times a whole number, a fraction times a fraction and dividing with the reciprocal (keep, change, flip), with results to simplify.

Mixed numbers

Turning mixed numbers into improper fractions and back: 2 1/3 = 7/3. An option under “More options” writes every improper result as a mixed number too.

Negative fractions

Level 5, for Grade 8, practises the sign rules, brackets and integer numerators.

Step-by-step answer key

Every step named: the LCM and the equivalent fractions, the numerators, simplifying with the GCF and the mixed number.

Always new exercises

The “New” button creates fresh fractions with the same settings, never repeating a calculation within an exercise, with exact arithmetic: great for homework, review and tests.

Frequently Asked Questions about Fraction Operations

How do you add fractions with unlike denominators?
Find the least common multiple (LCM) of the denominators: it is the common denominator. Multiply the top and bottom of each fraction by the same number (the LCM divided by its denominator), then add the numerators. For example: 3/4 + 5/6 = 9/12 + 10/12 = 19/12 = 1 7/12.
How do you divide fractions?
Keep the first fraction, change the division to a multiplication and flip the second fraction: you multiply by its reciprocal. For example: 2/3 ÷ 4/5 = 2/3 × 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6.
Which grades are the worksheets for?
Level 1 suits Grade 5 (like denominators and a fraction times a whole number), level 2 Grade 6, level 3 Grades 6-7 (the LCM and simplifying), level 4 Grade 7 (mixed numbers) and level 5 Grade 8 (negative fractions).
Are the answers simplified?
Yes. The answer key always reaches the simplest form, dividing the numerator and denominator by their GCF, and with the mixed-number option under “More options” on it also writes improper results as mixed numbers.
Can I mix several operations on one worksheet?
Yes. Choose “All four operations” or add one exercise for each operation and level: they all share the worksheet and the answer key, and you can reorder them by dragging or with the Up and Down buttons.
Is any student data sent to a server?
No. Every worksheet is created in your browser and no student data is stored. Templates are kept in your browser’s memory.
