❓ Frequently Asked Questions about Assessment Rubrics

What is an assessment rubric?

A grid that crosses the assessment criteria (what is assessed) with performance levels (how well it is done). Each cell describes what the work looks like at that level, so pupils know what is expected and every piece of work is assessed against the same standard.

How many performance levels should I use?

Four levels is the most common choice: it makes you decide whether the work is above or below what was expected. Three levels are simpler and work very well for self-assessment with younger pupils. Choose it in step 2.

Can I change the criteria and descriptors?

Yes. Under the wizard there is a criteria editor: switch criteria off, rename them, change their weight, rewrite the descriptors or add your own. An empty descriptor prints as a blank cell to write in by hand.

Can I use it for self-assessment and peer assessment?

Yes. Each copy has “Teacher”, “Self” and “Peer” boxes. For Grades 1-2 the descriptors are written in the first person, with faces, so pupils can assess themselves.

Why is there no answer key?

Because a rubric is the assessment tool itself: there are no right answers, only descriptors to judge each pupil's work.

Is any pupil data sent to a server?

No. Rubrics are generated in your browser and templates are saved in your browser's memory.
