Guide: cut and make crafts for preschool and early primary

Cutting, folding and gluing build fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and patience, and end with something to play with. This printable crafts generator makes true-size A4 templates to colour and make, with the cutting line, the fold lines and the glue tabs marked and numbered steps. There are templates for ages 3, 4 and 5 and for grades 1 and 2.

Animal masks

Cat, bear, rabbit, lion, mouse and fox, with the eyes 54 mm apart, the distance between a child’s eyes. For ages 3-4 they are held on a stick; at 5 they have holes for a string, and in grades 1-2 two darts that curve them.

A crown that fits

Three pointed pieces and a band marked with head sizes from 48 to 56 cm: glue it where each child’s size is marked. The points keep the same spacing on every piece, so the joins do not show.

Finger puppets

Pets, farm or wild animals in a circle on a band that wraps round a finger. Six a sheet for ages 3-4, nine at 5 and nine with a body and paws in grades 1-2, for telling stories.

Pinwheel and fortune teller

The pinwheel has numbered tips to bring to the middle. The fortune teller (cootie catcher) has its colours, numbers and dares or questions turned so they read the right way once folded.

Bookmarks, paper chains and boxes

Straight bookmarks, ones with a hole for a ribbon or corner bookmarks to fold; paper doll chains that come out holding hands; and a gift box with its lid from its net.

Lines children understand

A solid line to cut, a dotted line to fold, stripes to glue and grey to cut away. For ages 3-4 the line is thick and the shapes big; in grades 1-2 cuts are finer and there are more folds.

Frequently asked questions about printable crafts

Do the templates print at true size?
Yes. Print at actual size or 100 % (not “fit to page”): the crown closes from 48 to 56 cm and the mask’s eyes are 54 mm apart. Thin card makes the crafts last longer.
What ages are they for?
Ages 3 to 7, from preschool to grade 2. Each craft has its age in the wizard: big shapes with a thick line for ages 3-4, more pieces at 5 and finer cuts and folds in grades 1-2. The fortune teller, the paper chain and the box start at age 5.
Is there an answer key?
They do not need one: every sheet has the legend (cut, fold, glue) and numbered steps. To print the template without the steps, untick them under More options.
How do you fold the fortune teller?
Cut out the square, lay it face down and fold the four corners to the middle; turn it over and fold the corners to the middle again; fold it in half and put your fingers under the coloured squares. The numbers and messages already come out the right way up.
Are there more fine motor worksheets?
Yes: the pre-writing worksheets to trace lines, the mazes and the dot-to-dot pictures.
And nets of 3D shapes?
The nets of 3D shapes have cubes, prisms, pyramids, cylinders and cones to cut out and fold. There is more in early years.
