Base ten blocks
Flats, rods and cubes drawn in black and white to count and write the number. At level 3 there are more than 9 rods or cubes, so pupils regroup.
In our number system a digit is worth more or less depending on where it stands: the 4 in 47 is worth 40, and the 4 in 3,452 is worth 400. Understanding this is the basis of column methods, estimating and large numbers. This free place value worksheet generator builds A4 worksheets for Grades 1 to 4 with base ten blocks, the place value chart, expanded form, building numbers from their parts, the value of a digit and numbers in words, with an answer key.
Student worksheet
Answer key Flats, rods and cubes drawn in black and white to count and write the number. At level 3 there are more than 9 rods or cubes, so pupils regroup.
From the number to the chart and from the chart to the number, from tens and ones up to hundred thousands.
Every number as a sum of values (3,000 + 400 + 50 + 2) and in place value units (3 Th + 4 H + 5 T + 2 O), with zeros in the middle.
Parts in order, mixed up, with missing places or regrouped like 2 H + 15 T + 3 O: pupils have to think about the value of each part.
One digit underlined: its place and its value. With repeated digits, so pupils see that the same 4 can be worth 4,000 or 40.
From digits to words and back, with hyphens (twenty-three) and "and" after the hundreds, as written in British English. The answer key gives every answer.
