Teaching guide: working with the coordinate plane

The coordinate plane places every point with two numbers, x first and then y. It is the basis of graphs, maps and functions. This free coordinate plane worksheet generator builds A4 worksheets for Grades 5 to 8: reading and plotting coordinates, hidden pictures, quadrants, transformations and distances, with an answer key that draws the points and the shapes.

Read coordinates

Six lettered points: x first (along the corridor), then y (up the stairs). There is often a pair with swapped coordinates, like (2, 7) and (7, 2), because the order matters.

Plot points

Six points to mark with their letter, in the first quadrant, in all four quadrants or with half units.

Hidden pictures

A list of points to join in order: at the end a house, a rocket or a cat appears. Motivating, and a lot of coordinate practice in a row.

Quadrants

The signs of the coordinates give the quadrant: (−, +) is II. At level 3 pupils reason without numbers: if P(a, b) is in II, where is (b, a)?

Translations and reflections

A translation adds the vector to every vertex; a reflection in the x-axis changes the sign of y, and in the y-axis the sign of x.

Distances

Horizontal and vertical lines: count the squares or subtract the coordinates. At level 3, the fourth vertex of a rectangle, its perimeter and its area.

Frequently asked questions about coordinate plane worksheets

Which grades are these worksheets for?
Grades 5 to 8 (Year 6 to Year 9). The first quadrant and hidden pictures are for Grade 5; all four quadrants for Grades 6 and 7, once negative numbers arrive; half units, reflections followed by translations and rectangles for Grade 8.
Does each exercise have only one answer?
Yes. Points never coincide, they are at least one square apart, and every letter has a clear spot next to its point, touching no other letter, line or axis number. The answers in the key come from the printed coordinates.
What is in the answer key?
The coordinates written in, the points plotted with their letters, the hidden picture drawn and named, the images of the shapes drawn with A′, B′, C′ and their coordinates, and the lengths, perimeter and area.
How are coordinates with decimals written?
With a decimal point, as in (2.5, −1). On the Spanish and Catalan pages, where the decimal separator is a comma, the two coordinates are separated with a semicolon instead: (2,5; −1).
Do the hidden pictures repeat?
There are twelve pictures of our own, and within one exercise none repeats until all have appeared. Each time they are placed somewhere else on the grid, and sometimes mirrored.
What other worksheets go well with the coordinate plane?
How do I print only the answer key?
Click Print and choose "Answer key", or "Worksheet and answer key" for both. Your browser's print dialog can also save it as a PDF.
Is any pupil data sent anywhere?
No. Worksheets are generated in your browser and templates are saved in your browser's memory.
